5 ways to Save Electricity at Home in Texas this Holiday Season

December 19, 2012

Holidays bring a lot of happiness, fun and frolic but they may also drain your pocket if you don’t remember some basic steps for electricity conservation. Here are 5 ways to bring down your electric bills during the forthcoming festive season without compromising on the festive mood.

  • Decorate your house with candles and LED lights: Decorating your house with traditional Christmas lights can be a costly affair. You can use LED Christmas lights, candles, and fiber optic decorations instead. Since LED lights use 90% less energy than traditional Christmas lights, you can let your home shine without raising the electricity bill.
  • Restrict the time the lights are on: It’s a good idea to switch on your lights only after the sunset and switch them off before going to sleep. You may set a daily target of 6 hours of light usage and make sure not to go beyond the limit. If you find it difficult to remember when to switch on and off the lights, you may buy holiday lights that come with a timer. Another thing to remember is that once your Christmas tree is lit, it will provide adequate light in your living room. So, you can turn off the lights in your living room and enjoy the festive environment that comes alive with the lights that adorn your Christmas tree.
  • Bake a number of cuisines simultaneously: Festive season is the time when scrumptious dishes are baked. Baking several items together can save a lot of electricity rather than baking them separately. You can use microwave to bake cookies and cakes, as they use 50% less electricity as compared to a conventional electric stove. You should also refrain from cooking a lot of food, because they will not only consume a lot of electricity but may eventually go to the garbage bin.
  • Unplug all your electrical appliances before going on a holiday: If you plan to go on a winter break, make sure to unplug all your electrical appliances like computers, music systems, TV’s, radios, printers, DVD players, microwaves and mobile chargers etc. These appliances use electricity in trickles even when they are switched off but kept plugged in. You should also turn off your AC unit before you leave.
  • Turning down the thermostat during a party: When you have a house full of party guests, you can turn your thermostat down as your house will still stay warm even without it. This move will help you save electricity and bring down your electric bills.

So, use these tips this holiday season to save electricity. About Shop Texas Electricity– Shop Texas Electricity helps consumers and businesses compare and shop for their electricity plans in Texas. Learn more about Shop Texas Electricity by visiting us at
