How Electric Providers are Preparing Customers for Hurricane Season ?

Texas frequently bears the brunt of various storms, so electricity providers and TDSPs are taking extra steps to ensure that when the storms come, your power doesn’t go out. Over the winter, Houston was hit with uncommonly low temperatures, and Dallas was hit by ice storms. These can wreak havoc with electricity transmission as the heavy ice can damage transmission lines and affect energy production. As summer rolls around, thunderstorms and hurricanes will pose the biggest threat to energy production. Hurricane season has officially started at the beginning of this month, and all across the state, preparations are being made to reinforce the energy grid.

 

On the bright side, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted that this year will likely see fewer Atlantic hurricanes thanks to El Nino. Texas electricity providers are still working to make sure any storms that do hit Houston don’t affect the electricity grid. These Emergency Restoration Plans are the contingencies that energy companies use to restore power as quickly as possible if the grid does happen to go down. The technicians that execute these restoration plans focus on safety, not only their own, but also the safety of customers. They partake in drills and after-action reviews after actual outages to continue being as efficient as they can be.

 

As soon as a storm hits, restoration crews prepare to carry out their duties. Once it is deemed safe, the crews are deployed to assess the damage caused by the storm. Depending on how bad the storm was, it could take up to a few days to do a full assessment, but once completed, the crew will begin repairing substations and wires, bringing the grid back to working order. Restoration crews consist of many different people, including some who don’t work in the field or even some from neighboring states.

 

It can be very frustrating having your power out, especially for days at a time. Energy companies work hard to restore power, but they have to do it safely, which can take some extra time on top of surveying the damage extent.
